Hi there, I am Leqin, 吕乐琴!
I am Leqin(乐琴), sounded like [luh, tsin]. Don’t worry if you find it difficult to pronounce. You are not alone. I’ve been asked hundreds of times about the pronunciation in the past year. This name shows that my origin is from China. In the past year, I've been studying in Canada. This website is about my experience finding ideas for social change by weaving different cultures, languages and societies together. I call this "The Shuttle for Hope".
Growing up in Guangzhou, the biggest city in southern China, I witnessed rapid changes in all aspects of life with the convergence of global trade and social welfare reform. My background in social work allowed me to analyze strengths and needs of service users and communities. My involvement in an international participatory action research and in the disaster response to the Sichuan Earthquake consolidated my interest in community development and hardened my determination to further study in this field.
Pursuing graduate education in Canada is a turning point in both my professional career and personal life. I have faced a variety of difficulties, from participating in ideological discussions to looking for placement, and even finding my way home in a winter blizzard. Many times I was scared, frustrated, and began to doubt myself. But everytime I was able to overcome the challenges and become stronger. Now, I feel I am more capable to:
Ø Work in a cross cultural setting with a better understanding of diversity
Ø Critically analyze social problems and development
Ø Utilize community-based research to improve program development and my practice
Ø Engage in networking and partnerships with multidiscipline professions, activists, and community members
Ø Plan social programs creatively and organize events efficiently
Ø Keep my head up in the face of difficulties
I would like to share my challenging but fruitful journey with you, especially how I shuttled between different cultures, languages and societies in my search for hope. I would appreciate your comments, questions and advice at any time. I can be reached at leqin.lu@gmail.com.
